Alex Ferguson is not the only one with a long and distinguished career in football management. Our own Mr Smyth could easily match the trophy haul though, unlike Alex, he has never had to resort to the hairdryer treatment! U14 Brunner Soccer Team 1990-1991Here is a picture of a youthful Mr Smyth with his successful 1990-91 U14 team. If you are in the picture or where a student in the school at that time perhaps you could get in touch via the website to share your memories. Also, there is a down-loadable record of the team’s record here: U-14_Winners_1990-1991

  1. Being Dave Kelly’s understudy I think I only managed 45 minutes of game time during the whole year. I’d like to think I contributed a bit more until I did my leaving cert in 95. (once someone realised I was a better left back than a goalkeeper 🙂 ).

I have some great memories of being involved with the Brunner football and GAA teams. The All Ireland Final brings back some funny memories. On the trip there and back (in the little white van) the only 2 tapes we had were UB40 and Black Box, how many times where they played?? Drawing the short straw and having to bunk with Pat Russell. James Carroll being questioned by the English army as we crossed the border and insisting he was a Rangers fan. The Brunner Family descending on Ballybofey on Match Day. Keith’s fantastic free kick to get us back in the game. Worst of all wearing my only jacket onto the pitch for a warm-up at half time and then having to wear it home covered in mud :).

Other fond memories include our fabulous home ground of Grangegorman and its sloping pitch. The team talks “We’re playing 4-4-2, you’re only as good as your last game and of course no messing at the back just get rid of it.”

Although you didn’t teach any of my classes I’d just like to thank you Mr Smyth for persevering with us on and off the pitch. I know I definitely wasn’t the easiest student.
