The Senior Rugby team have reached their first rugby final after a dramatic win over St. Patricks Cathedral Grammar school and a hard fought draw against Drimnagh Castle.

The team, who received a bye in their first game, put on a dominant display against St. Patricks Cathedral Grammar. The windy conditions in Clontarf made kicking very difficult but with six tries and three conversions, they ran out easy winners at 36-17.

The trip to Drimnagh castle was never going to be easy. Drimnagh had several wins and some very experienced rugby players on their squad but that did not fear St. Pauls. Under the new management of Mr. Geraghty and Mr. Dunleavy, who, rumour has it, turned down the Ireland job, the lads put in their best display yet. In wet and windy conditions, the game was always going to be low scoring. One try each and several missed opportunities meant that St. Pauls earned a 5-5 draw and a place in the final. Mr. Geraghty and Mr. Dunleavy said that the team “should be very proud of their performance as they really put their bodies on the line in what was a physical and mental battle throughout”.

In another twist to the tale, Drimnagh needed at least a draw as well to book their place, so the two counterparts will meet again in a winner takes all final in Donnybrook in the upcoming weeks.
